English: This theme is a continuation of the Annunciation. After the announcement of the Good News, Mary got to know from the archangel about pregnancy of her elderly childless cousin Elizabeth. Mary went immediately to Judaea to visit her. When they met, they greeted each other. Elizabeth was the first to greet Mary as future Mother of God. Mary stayed at house of Zechariah and Elizabeth circa three months and then returned to Nazareth shortly before birth of John the Baptist.
This theme is rather simple concerning iconography. It has been known since the 5th c. |
