Summary
edit| Description | "The Tower of Cirith Ungol" by Donato Giancola, an example of his neoclassical approach to illustrating Tolkien |

Donato Giancola |
| Source (WP:NFCC#4) | Original publication: Middle-Earth: Journeys in Myth and Legend Immediate source: https://www.tor.com/2019/04/22/donato-giancola-is-the-caravaggio-of-middle-earth/ |
| Date of publication | 2019 |
| Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Illustrating Tolkien |
| Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | Show Giancola's neoclassical Tolkien style, and illustrate the exact painting discussed in the article for readers from around the world unfamiliar with his work. This in turn should enable them to evaluate for themselves how effective the artwork is in conveying the emotional content of Tolkien's novel, and how far his "classical-abstract-realist" approach may be appropriate to Middle-earth themes. The image is tightly integrated with the cited text in the 'Classical realism, 2019' section of the article, and the two support each other, so it cannot be considered "decorative". The image is the only one in the section, so it does not form part of a "gallery". |
| Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
No other painting will do as this particular work is discussed. In any case, all Giancola's work is in copyright. |
| Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The image is cropped and reduced from the original. It is the only instance of Giancola's work in the article or indeed anywhere on Wikipedia. |
| Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
It seems most unlikely, as the image is already on the web at much better resolution. |
