English: Steamer Oaxaca, private yacht of G. Allen Hancock in 1928. This ship was built for the British Admiralty as Pelargonium in 1918, a Flower-class Q-ship.
This photo was published by the Los Angeles Bureau of the International Newsreel. The label on the reverse reads, in part: Los Angeles-----Lives of Capt. G. Allen Hancock millionaire backer of the Southern Cross flight to Australia, and many other prominent Southern Californians were in peril when his fast steamer Oaxaca crashed into Arctic rocks off Wrangell island [sic], according to advices recieved [sic] here. The Oaxaca is a combination passenger and freight craft utilized by Hancock in commuting back and forth to his 5000 acre ranch at Mazatlan. P G 7/13/28 Photo shows the Steamer OAXACA [sic] |
