Summary

Description
English: Siamese Soldiers of the Royal Siamese Army in Chiang Kham (เชียงคำ) in 1885. This was during the Haw Wars (1865-1890) and the reign of King Rama V. At that time, the area was under Siamese control. The foreigner in the center of the photo is believed to be James Fitzroy McCarthy (1853–1919), also known as Phra Wiphak Phuwadon. McCarthy was an Irish surveyor and cartographer who played a significant role in demarcating Siamese borders and was the first Director-General of the Royal Thai Survey Department (established in 1885). He traveled with the troops to suppress the Haw rebellion.
