Summary

Description
English: Surviving Macahuitl excavated from San Marcos Street, on display in the Museo del Templo Mayor for the "Tenochtitlan y Tlatelolco: a 500 años de su caída" exhibit. The Macuahuitl was found during a salvage archaeology excavation from November 1993 to March 1994 by Dr. Juana Moreno Hernández, and is possibly the only surviving example of the weapon.

The bent, warped shape was a result of the process used to preserve the Macuahuitl after being excavated, though there is obviously a lot of other wear and the lower portion of the weapon is broken off: part of it is missing, but there is an additional recovered piece, part of the handle and pommel, which is not shown here.

Dimensions:

83cm long (portion shown here, full length including lost and broken portions is 110cm)
6.5cm wide (at tip/widest point)

Information about the specimen can be found in "Macuáhuitl recuperado en el centro de la Ciudad de México", a presentation by Dr. Moreno Hernandez for the exhibition, seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j59VwkrYxaA.

Additional prior publications/presentations by the same author which discuss the specimen are "Un maquahuitl en contexto arqueológico" on March 15th 2013 with the architect Alejandro Pastrana at the Museo del Templo Mayor; and "El Maquahuitl recuperado en un salvamento arqueológico en el centro histórico de la Ciudad de México” on October 11th 2016 at the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia for the Fifth Colloquium on War Studies in Mesoamerica (Quinto Coloquio de estudios sobre la guerra en Mesoamérica).
