English: Built in 1857, this Italianate-style house was built for Civil War US Army General Rufus Dawes, and his wife, Mary Beman Gates Dawes, and was the childhood home of Charles G. Dawes (1865-1951), whom was a graduate of Marietta College, and became the 30th Vice President of the United States, served as an ambassador to the United Kingdom, and authored the 1924 German Reparations Plan, known as the Dawes Plan, which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. The house is clad in red brick with a gabled roof, one-over-one double-hung windows with decorative hoods, one-story bay windows, oxeye attic windows, and front porch with decorative railings and trim. The building is a contributing structure in the Marietta Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and expanded to its present size in 2001. |
