El 26 de septiembre de 1960, arriban a la IV Brigada Aérea Mendoza el primer grupo de cazabombarderos North American F-86F-30 NA Sabre. El vuelo ferry, liderado por el comodoro Jorge Miguel Martínez Zuviría, comenzó el 6 de setiembre, desde la AFB Williams (Arizona).

El segundo grupo, llega el 10 de diciembre. Con la recepción de todo el material, se reactiva el Grupo 1 de Caza Bombardeo. La incorporación del Sabre marca un punto de inflexión en las unidades de caza de
