| Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Illustrating Tolkien |
| Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | Illustrate the hybrid style of woodcut, botanical illustration, and fantasy art used by Judd, enabling readers unfamiliar with the Judd & Judd book Flora of Middle-earth to get an idea of the visual style and effectiveness of the artwork. This in turn will allow them to form their own opinions on how appropriate this kind of illustration may be to Middle-earth themes, albeit in a derivative work, and to what extent the scholarly comments about its effectiveness may be felt to be justified. The woodcut is the only image in the 'Fantasy and botany, 2017' section; it is supported by the text that accompanies the image, and supports it in its turn, so it is neither "decorative" nor forms part of a "gallery". |
| Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
All images by Judd are in copyright. |
| Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | This is the only image by Judd in the article, or indeed anywhere on Wikipedia. It is cropped and used at reduced resolution. |
| Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
It seems most unlikely, given the book's limited commercial appeal, and the use of a portion of a single image from the many in the book. |
