English: Photographs taken on Shaheed Island (Neil Island), Andaman Islands, India, on December 26, 2004 when a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck the Indian Ocean off the northwest coast of Sumatra in Indonesia . The Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands were overwhelmed by the tsunami that was generated after the earthquake, causing an estimated 8,000 victims. Many islands were flooded, Neil Island was only partially affected, especially on the side facing Indonesia. The beach in the photograph is the one on the western tip seen from the boat that transferred resources and people with daily connections from Port Blair to Neil Island (which in the days following the earthquake and tsunami was blocked due to the inaccessibility of ports for four days)
Italiano: Fotografie scattate sull'isola di Shaheed (Neil Island), isole Andamane, India, il 26 dicembre 2004 quando un violentissimo terremoto, con una magnitudo di 9,1 ha colpito l'Oceano Indiano al largo della costa nord-occidentale di Sumatra in Indonesia. Le isole andamane e le isole Nicobare furono travolte dallo tsunami che si generò dopo il terremoto provocando, si stima, circa 8000 vittime. Molte isole vennero inondate, l'Isola di Neil Island fu colpita solo in parte, soprattutto nel versante esposto verso l'Indonesia. La spiaggia nella fotografia è quella sulla punta versante occidentale vista dalla barca che trasferiva risorse e persone con collegamenti quotidiani da Port Blair a Neil Island (che nei giorni successivi al terremoto e allo tsunami fu bloccato per inagibilità dei porti per quattro giorni) |
