Description

This is the Mí'kmaq Santéé Mawióómi flag, or Grand Council Flag. Originating in 1900 and believed to have been first flown in 1901, this flag is meant to be hung vertically, but it is commonly flown horizontally with the star in the upper left corner.[1]

The meaning of the Míkmaq Nation Flag:

   Wapék (White) - Denotes the purity of Creation
   Mekwék Klujjewey (Red Cross) - Represents mankind and infinity (four directions)
   Nákúset (Sun) - Forces of the day
   Tepkunaset (Moon) - Forces of the night
