Summary

Description

The steps in the analysis of mass spectra of nucleic acids are: background subtraction, peak detection, and quantitation. The mass and intensity of the peaks are calculated. The mass is used to identify the nucleic acid from a short list of possibilities determined by the molecular biology performed during the experiment. The intensity is taken as a measure of nucleic acid quantity. The identity and the quantity of the nucleic acids in the sample are used to determine nucleic acid properties including genotype and mutations.

This diagram image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Maldi informatics figure 6.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
