Translation of the accompanying Mandaic text from Drower, Ethel S. (1950). Diwan Abatur or Progress through the Purgatories. Studi e Testi. Vol. 151. Vatican City: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.

Lower third of the image (Drower 1950: 9):

  • Left: This is the likeness of Šitel, who standeth in the jordan. And his life was cut short for Adam, the first man.
  • Middle: This is the likeness of Anoš, who grasps Šitel son of Adam by the hand, and (if is) his left hand that saluteth his (Šitel's) right hand.
  • Right: This is a portrait of Adam and Yadatan who standeth in the jordan.

Upper right side of the image, with three figures inside a frame (Drower 1950: 8):

  • (Above) This is the likeness of Simat Hiia (“Treasure-of-Life”) daughter of Yušamin.
  • (By her feet) This is her throne, its name is “Leafy”
  • (Above the smaller figure, left) This is the likeness of Mdinat Hiia (“City-of-Life”).
  • (Below, right) This is the likeness of Šarhabiel.

Upper left side of the image, with three figures each holding a staff (margna) (Drower 1950: 8):

  • (Left to right) This is the likeness of Bihram who standeth on the bank of the jordan.
  • This is the likeness of Bihram and his incense-cup; its name is Šarat (“It-was-proved-true”), its name is also Bi... azaria (illegible).
  • This is the likeness of Hibil and his incense-cup; its name is Šarhabiel.
(Accessories) This is the cup of oil; its name is “Thou-art-loved”. This, is the brazier; its name is “He-had-mercy”.
