Summary

An 8-inch salvo from either Japanese heavy cruiserChikuma straddles the burning U.S. escort carrier Gambier Bay on October 25, 1944 during the Battle off Samar. A single white splash from the battleship Yamato can be seen to the left. A Japanese warship (possibly Yamato) can be faintly seen in the center right of the photograph.
