Description

Sculpture installation by Judy Fox, Snow White and the Seven Sins (Installation at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu. 2010). The image illustrates a foundational body of work in Judy Fox's career beginning in the early 2000s, when she produced a series of sculptural installations combining life-sized human nudes and surreal, invented creatures derived from iconic figures of folklore and creation myths. In this work, she reinterpreted the fairy tale, Snow White, presenting the title character nude and lying in state on a coffin, surrounded by fleshy, roughly two-foot homages to the seven deadly sins described as hybrids of human genitalia, Disney references, slugs, crustaceans and dwarf outfits. Critics interpreted the work as a portrayal of a psychic split in a girl transitioning to womanhood. This work was publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions and discussed in major art journals and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a major body of work in Judy Fox's career beginning in the early 2000s: her sculptural installations, often comprised of realistic, ethnically diverse, life-sized human nudes (babies, prepubescent children and adults) as well as surrealist, invented creatures modeled in terra cotta and painted in casein. These works combine present-day themes and strategies with traditions resurrected from painted renaissance and gothic church carvings in order to reinterpret archetypes, folklore, creation myths and iconic figures from wide-ranging cultures and historical periods. Because the article is about an artist and the work that makes her notable, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand her significance, which arises in part from this foundational body of work. It brought Fox her initial recognition through exhibitions, coverage by major critics and publications and museum acquisitions. Fox's work of this type and this work is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.
