Johan Zacharias Blackstadius var målare, grafiker och lärare i figurteckning och målning vid Tekniska skolan (Konstfack) i Stockholm. Han tillhörde konstnärskretsen kring den målande svenske kungen Karl XV. Blackstadius verk omfattar altartavlor i Sverige och Finland, takmålningar och porträtt samt historiska och bibliska scener.

Målningen Två bondflickor som lyssnar till Strömkarlens spel är en så kallad folksägenskildring, en motivgenre som blir populär under romantiken vid mitten av 1800-talet. Folksägenskildringar visar ofta scener från folklivet med dess traditioner och högtider. Inom genren skildras även motiv från sagor och myter.

Strömkarlen, också kallad Näcken, lever enligt gammal folktro i sjöar och åar där han genom sitt harp- eller fiolspel lockar människor att gå ner i vattnet och drunkna. Näcken är ett övernaturligt vattenväsen men kan även uppträda i hästgestalt som den så kallade Bäckahästen.
