He was born in Grybów, Austria-Hungary, on April 7, 1880. His parents were James C. and Ida Bell (nee Allen) Corrigan. His father was from Cleveland, Ohio, US, but was prospecting for oil in Galicia at the time of James's birth.
He was the only surviving heir of James C. Corrigan, after all but his father drowned when the yachet Idler capsized and sank on Lake Erie on July 7, 1900.
When his father died in 1908, James inherited millions of dollars. He married Laura Mae McMartin on December 2, 1916. His father's will left with him 40 percent of the ownership of Corrigan-McKinney Steel, but control of the stock was vested in co-owner Price McKinney.
McKinney dropped the name Corrigan from the firm in 1917, angering James. He ousted McKinney as a trustee. After purchasing another 13 percent of the outstanding McKinney Steel stock on the open market, he returned to Cleveland in May 1925 and removed McKinney as president of the company. He renamed the company Corrigan-McKinney Steel, and ran the firm until his death.
James W. Corrigan Jr. died of a stroke in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 23, 1928.
