Summary

Description
Italiano: Impiraresse, Anno 1960

English: The production of glass beads began in Venice, along with the counterfeiting of crystals and precious stones. The production of "perlullas de verixellis" was furthered and perfected since the thirteenth century. Initially produced by modeling mosaics of glass and enamel, the small pearls were used as ornaments for cult images, clothes and jewelry.

The impiraresse in Venice

In Venice, we often met women sitting in front of their doorstep, stringing tiny pearls. It was the impiraresse (in the singular impiraressa).

This work of threading pearls was essentially feminine. There were children from 8-10 years old to elderly women... at least as long as rheumatism did not prevent them from wielding needles.
