English: A page from Diwan by Hafiz Al-Shirazi, featuring a portrait of Sam Mirza with a female lover, who enjoy dancing and music. Painted for Sam Mirza around 1533 AD. Cambridge Massachusetts Private collection.
  • "Illustration p. 137: On a page of a very different character, a second portrait of Sam Mirza; it depicts a seated prince, a young girl beside him on a carpet, in a flowering garden, entertained by musicians and dancers; a page pours them a cup of wine, and an extremely elegant canopy shelters them from the heat. They are overflowing with tenderness for each other. The bravura piece is the two young girls, with opposite arches, playing castanets and silhouetted against the dark grass. The composition appears simple, but it is a deceptive impression; could these flowering trees not be a hundred years old? In reality, no character, no plant is placed at random; everything contributes to giving maximum brilliance to this rural festival, which possesses a rhythm as powerful as the more populated scenes in the same manuscript and the simple conventions used for the hill and the clouds close this enchanted vision far better than more realism could have done. This page seems to be by a different hand than the court scene signed by Sultan Mohammed or the other miniatures in this book." La Peinture Persane, Basil Gray p.136 (translated from French)
