Summary

Description
English: The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a landmark cable-stayed bridge currently under construction to connect Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit River. Named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, the bridge will span about 2.5 kilometers with an 853-meter main span, the longest of its kind in North America, with no piers in the water. Its design includes six traffic lanes, a toll-free multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, and two striking 220-meter towers shaped to resemble a hockey stick in motion. The project also features large ports of entry on both sides, 167 acres in the U.S. and 130 acres in Canada, linking directly to I-75 in Michigan and Highway 401 in Ontario. Construction began in 2018 and was originally slated for completion in 2024, but due to delays in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic the bridge is now expected to open sometime soon in late 2025 or early 2026 at a cost of about CA$6.4 billion. Delivered through a public-private partnership with Bridging North America, they will continue to receive monthly payments from operating the bridge for the next three decades (until at least 2055). Once open, it will significantly ease congestion at existing crossings, enhance trade and travel between the two countries, and provide new community, environmental, and recreational benefits, making it one of the most important cross-border infrastructure projects in North America.
