Summary

Description

The Edmonton Space and Science Centre was a more recent addition to Edmonton's collection of modern architecture.

Built in 1984, it lies across the park from Coronation Pool and echoes many of that building surfaces despite its much later construction date. It's slanted roof respectfully tilts towards the earlier building, honouring instead of diminishing or contradicting it

This spiraling linoleum form is a kind of poor man's Guggenheim. It was designed by Douglas J. Cardinal who is better known for his work on Ottawa's massive Museum of Civilization.

In the mid nineties, it was decided that the building wasn't "cool enough" and a jazzed up yellow and glass extension was added, completely at odds with and disrespecting the original building. This coincided with a name change to "Odysseum" and then to "Telus World of Science".

This upset me greatly. As is typical in this city, the new development sought to distract from the old instead of respecting and integrating with it.
