Summary

Description
English: Charles J. Holmes, captain of the racing yacht Idler, in July 1900. Born in 1872, Holmes had spent most of his life sailing large and small craft. He was reckless, a self-promoter, a thrill-seeker, and a liar.

He spent nine years sailing the Great Lakes. On November 13, 1896, Holmes attempted to bring the steamer MV Walulla into the harbor at Conneaut, Ohio, during a severe storm without the aid of tugboats. The ship grounded on the shoreline and burst into flames and two crewmembers died.

In July 1900, while captain of the racing yachet Idler, he failed to reduce sail as a severe thunderstorm approached. The ship capsized and sank, killing six of the seven passengers. Holmes survived.

Public domain
The copyright situation of this work is theoretically uncertain, because in the country of origin copyright lasts 70 years after the death of the author, and the date of the author's death is unknown. However, the date of creation of the work was over 120 years ago, and it is thus a reasonable assumption that the copyright has expired (see here for the community discussion). Do not use this template if the date of death of the author is known.
