Purpose of use

To illustrate a key element of the plot, production, and reception. The shot shows the Doctor reappearing in front of the Toymaker after being invisible for two episodes; this was to accommodate William Hartnell's holiday during filming. During this time, the programme's production team considered replacing him with a different actor; this did not occur, but it was the precursor to regeneration, a concept that allows the lead actor to be replaced, which was introduced later in the year. Michael Gough's performance as the Toymaker also received praise from audiences and critics.
