Summary

Description

A diagram of the Calvin cycle showing carbon capture from CO2 and carbon output as glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate.

Carbon can also exit the cycle as glycerate 3-phosphate, for production of fatty acids, and some amino acids.

What is shown here is only the canonical representation of the Calvin cycle, where carbon exits as glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate for gluconeogenesis, or glycerol production.

Key: Circles represent atoms according to the following:

Alternative chemical names:

  • 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA or 3PG) is also known as glycerate 3-phosphate or GP in British textbooks.
  • Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P or GAP) is also known as triose phosphate or TP in British textbooks.
