Licensing
editSome currency designs are ineligible for copyright and are in the public domain. Others are copyrighted.
This restriction tag has been placed because currency designs and images of them may be subject to additional legal restrictions outside of copyright law including laws regarding counterfeiting, which may also apply, particularly when this image is used in printed form.
Caution: Independent of British copyright legislation, under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981, Chapter 45, Section 18(1) , "It is [a criminal] offence for any person [resident in the United Kingdom], unless the relevant authority has previously consented in writing, to reproduce on any substance whatsoever, and whether or not on the correct scale, any British currency note or any part of a British currency note." Wikipedia has permission to use images created by the Governor and Company of the Bank of England of banknotes or other currency notes of the Bank without the need for separate licensing authorisations. This only applies to images of such banknotes created by the Bank of England itself.
Separate permissions and licences would need to be sought separately from the Lloyds Banking Group (on behalf of the Bank of Scotland), the Royal Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, the Bank of Ireland (Northern Ireland), the First Trust Bank, Danske Bank (Northern Ireland) and Ulster Bank.

| Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Banknotes of the pound sterling#Current circulation |
| Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | The image is used to identify the currency in question, and to assist recognition of it. |
| Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
Not permitted. "Banknote reproductions must either be an exact copy or bear no resemblance to our banknotes or contain any of the design elements."[1] |
| Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | It only needs to be used on pages about current and historical UK bank notes. |
| Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
The image itself has zero commercial value; the value of a banknote is as a physical object. The only value of the image would be in using it to create a counterfeit note. To mitigate this it has been downscaled (~3x) and is clearly marked as specimen. It would be pointless to use this image to create a counterfeit anyways as the Bank of England freely provides far better specimen images. |
