File:Asteroid proper elements i vs e.png

Original file (2,654 × 2,294 pixels, file size: 458 KB, MIME type: image/png)

Summary

English: A diagram showing proper orbital elements (inclination ip vs. eccentricity ep) for multi-opposition asteroids in the main belt.

Clumps indicate the location of asteroid families.

Updated on 14 April 2026 by en:User:Renerpho (Daniel Bamberger), to display 617290 asteroids -- those with numbers up to 700000 and proper elements in the indicated ep-ip-range. The source for the data remains the same, the AstDyS library of synthetic proper elements for numbered and multi-opposition asteroids. With more precise orbital elements, more accurate computations, and an order of magnitude more data, a lot more structure than before becomes visible.

Updated on 15 April 2026, to include the remaining objects in the AstDyS library per today. This includes Hungarias, Hildas and some other objects that had previously been cleaned out of the plot, such that it now presents the AstDyS database "as is".

Original file description

This diagram was created by me (Piotr Deuar) using data for 96944 minor planets, which was obtained from the AstDys site. Data was dated March 2005, calculation was by Z. Knezevic and A. Milani.
