Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski (1666–1726) był stronnikiem Augusta II, który w 1702 mianował go hetmanem polnym, a w 1706 hetmanem wielkim koronnym. Sieniawski był jednym z najważniejszych przywódców konfederacji sandomierskiej zawiązanej przeciwko Stanisławowi Leszczyńskiemu, również pretendującemu do polskiej korony.

W inwentarzach galerii Stanisława Augusta obraz odnotowany był bez określenia autora, podobnie jak w opracowaniach XIX-wiecznych. […]

Obraz, lub też jego pierwowzór, powstał w 2. dekadzie XVIII w., niedługo po otrzymaniu przez Sieniawskiego Orderu Orła Białego w 1713–14 […], którego wstęga i gwiazda są widoczne na portrecie. [Zob.
