Summary

Description
English: The 3rd West Virginia Infantry Regiment was a Union Army regiment that fought in the American Civil War. Originally called the 3rd Virginia Infantry Regiment, its soldiers were recruited mostly from the northern counties of what would become the state of West Virginia. After the state of West Virginia came into existence (June 1863), the regiment added "West" to its name. The Union regiment should not be confused with the Confederate 3rd Virginia Infantry that was recruited from other parts of the state of Virginia.
