Summary
| Description2026-04-04 Z5-3850E Achim-Lammerts Ophiocordyceps-gracilis.jpg |
Macro photograph of the entomopathogenic "Zombie fungus" (Paraisaria gracilis, syn. Ophiocordyceps gracilis) growing from mossy soil in the alluvial forest of the "Hördter Rheinaue" nature reserve, located between Kuhardt and Hördt, South Palatinate. This specimen features a fertile stroma head (spore carrier) with a diameter of approximately 5 mm. The parasitic species infects lepidopteran caterpillars or beetle larvae underground, mummifying the host's body before the long-stalked fruiting body emerges above the surface to release spores. According to the German Red List Centre, the species is classified as Least concern, but its current population status is noted as very rare.

- Under the following conditions:
- attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

Notes
| This photograph is not in the public domain. This also means that the photographer has copyright protection. |
| Please do not upload even a minimally modified version of the file here without consulting the copyright holder. Editing a .jpg file always results in an unwanted loss of quality. The author would also like to make minor modifications only at the source available to him. Depending to the used camera this is a .dng, .nef or .cr2 file. This ensures that the changes and quality are maintained. In addition, easy access to the source should also be possible for external use, which would not be possible via the file versions. |
| Please do not change the image file, the license or the file name! The file name is part of the mandatory information of the license and should therefore not be changed. The three components image file, license and file name (title) are inseparable. The author of this image has provided it here exactly with the mentioned license. In case of incorrect information, the author is grateful for appropriate information.
Please name yourself as the editor when uploading a derivative or clipping, as you are responsible for the changes. Only licenses that are compatible with the aforementioned license are permitted as alternatives. Otherwise, any other form of licensing is reserved exclusively for the author. Anyone who enters a link expects the corresponding page to be displayed with the appropriate image. Anything else leads to uncertainty. |
NOTE: This image is a focus stacked image consisting of 30 images that were merged using Helicon Focus 8.3.10. As a result, this image underwent digital manipulation which may have included blending, blurring, cloning, and colour and perspective adjustments. As a result of these adjustments, the image content may be slightly different to reality at the points where the images were combined. This manipulation is often required due to lens, perspective, and parallax distortions.
