Donkey is an upcoming American animated fantasy comedy film and a spin-off the Shrek franchise directed by Charlie Bean and produced by DreamWorks Animation. Eddie Murphy reprises his role as the titular character.
Donkey is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 30, 2028, by Universal Pictures.

Development
At the same time that Shrek 5 (2027) was revealed to be in development in April 2023, it was revealed that a spin-off film revolving around Donkey was in early talks as well.[1] In June 2024, Eddie Murphy confirmed that the film was happening and that he would return to voice Donkey.[2] In May 2025, it was revealed that Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri would be producing the film and that Christopher Knights would be editing the film.[3] In July 2025, Murphy confirmed that voice recording would commence in September and that the story was centered on his character, his wife, Dragon, and their hybrid kids. He noted the film would be released in 2028.[4] In June 2026, Charlie Bean was announced as the film's director.[5]
