Tallstar's Revenge is a children's fantasy novel written by Erin Hunter. It is the sixth "Super Edition" in the Warriors novel series, released on 2 July 2013.[1]

Tallstar's Revenge follows Talltail, later Tallstar, during his time as a young warrior, prior to be appointed leader of WindClan. Following the loss of his father, Sandgorse, Talltail leaves behind his clan on a quest for revenge aiming to kill the loner he finds responsible for his death.

The main story of Tallstar's Revenge takes place prior to the events of the first series, The Prophecies Begin, exploring Tallstar's life in WindClan before becoming leader and unearths unique aspects of WindClan culture. This novel introduces the concept of tunnelers who construct and hunt in underground tunnels, and moor-runners who hunt in the open grasslands. These roles are exclusive to early-WindClan and central to the main conflicts on the story.

Plot

edit

The novel opens with the former leader of WindClan, Heatherstar, receiving an prophetic warning from medicine cat Mothflight. She warns Heatherstar that one of WindClan's own warriors may have to leave to discover where his loyalty lies.

The narrative returns to Tallstar during his kithood, when he is known as Tallkit. As the son of two tunnelers he is teased regarding his heritage, and despite the expectation that he will follow in the path of his father Sandgorse, Tallkit is frightened by the tunnels, which puts strain on their relationship. This is is only exacerbated when Tallkit, now Tallpaw, becomes the apprentice of Dawnstripe a moor-runner due to his natural aptitude for running.

During Tallpaw's apprenticeship, he continues to find joy in his role as a moor-runner, and as on-going tunneling projects result in a nearly fatal flooding accident, Tallpaw swears off visiting the tunnels. Soon after, he's made aware of a group of rogues that visit WindClan each summer. One of these includes a tom named Sparrow, who takes a tour of the newly constructed tunnel along with Sandgorse. When the tunnel collapses, killing Sandgorse, but sparing Sparrow, Tallpaw believes that it is Sparrow is responsible for his father's death. After this event, Heatherstar permanently bans tunneling causing Tallpaw's resentment to grow

Tallpaw receives his warrior name despite emotional turmoil. However, through signs from WindClan's medicine cat, Barkface, Talltail decides to leave his clan behind to hunt down Sparrow and seek revenge for the loss of his father. During his journey he meets a friendly house cat named Jake who assists him on his journey. Eventually, upon finding Sparrow and Talltail lures him to a cliff with the intention to kill him but is stopped by the reveal that Sandgorse willingly sacrificed his life so Sparrow could escape. Talltail spares Sparrow, learning forgiveness, and coming to terms with his grief.

Talltail returns to his clan after giving Jake a heartfelt goodbye, forever changed by his journey, and is welcomed back by Heatherstar. Talltail proves his loyalty to the clan by saving WindClan kits and eventually earns the rank of deputy. As the seasons pass, Heatherstar eventually passes, allowing Tallstar to assume leadership of WindClan. As he receives his nine lines at the Moonstone he is visited by his father.

Critical reception

edit

Tallstar's Revenge is generally considered to be well-received, making it onto Publishers Weekly's "Top 25 Children's Frontlist Fiction" list for two weeks in 2013, peaking at #8.[2][3] Barnes&Noble described book as, "perfect for new readers and dedicated fans alike".[4] However, some reviewers note the novel could be potentially overwhelming for readers unfamiliar with the series.[5]

Some fans discuss underlying queer themes between Talltail and Jake, although this relationship is never explicitly confirmed.[6] However, on a personal blog in 2014 author Kate Cary stated that, "Tallstar never took a mate. His heart always belonged to his Jake", which continued to fuel online speculation.[7]
