Steffen Müller, born in 1978 in Eilenburg, is a German economist and professor. He is the Head of the Department of Structural Change and Productivity at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) and a Full Professor of Economics at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. His research focuses on labor economics, productivity analysis, and the economic effects of structural changes in Germany.
Life
editSteffen Müller studied economics at Leipzig University, where he obtained a Diplom in Economics in 2005. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics (summa cum laude) from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2009 under the supervision of Regina T. Riphahn. In 2014, he completed his habilitation in Economics and Econometrics at the same institution.
Müller began his academic career as a researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he worked at the Chair for Statistics and Empirical Economics from 2005 to 2014. During this time, he coordinated the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (2005–2009). In 2014, Müller joined the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) as the Head of the Department of Structural Change and Productivity. Concurrently, he became a Full Professor of Economics at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. He has held these positions since then.
Müller specializes in labor economics, structural change, and productivity analysis. His research often examines how labor markets adapt to trade shocks, technological changes, and demographic transitions, with a particular emphasis on Germany. His work also explores wage structures, the role of organized labor, and the impact of automation and robots on employment.
He has undertaken research visits at prominent institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Davis.
