History

edit

Establishment

edit

Richter & Phillips was founded in 1896 by C. E. Richter and Ferdinand Phillips. Originally called The Richter & Phillips Company, it began as a catalog business with its first retail location on Race Street near Fourth Street in downtown Cincinnati.

In 1903, the business relocated to Fifth and Main Streets, later moving to the Temple Bar Building on East Court Street, across from the Hamilton County Courthouse.

C. E. Richter was the son of Norbert Richter, a jeweler who immigrated to Cincinnati from Germany in 1850. Norbert Richter opened his own jewelry business on Vine Street in 1861 after working for local jewelers.

Ferdinand Phillips specialized in watchmaking and managed purchasing for the company. Members of both the Richter and Phillips families were involved in the business during its early years.

The Great Depression

edit

Following the Great Depression, Richter & Phillips was acquired by Fred W. Fehr, a diamond importer of New York. The business remained in operation through World War II.

Leadership later passed to Fred Fehr Jr., followed by subsequent generations of the Fehr family. [2]

20th Century

edit

In the late 20th century, a separate entity known as Richter & Phillips Jewelers & Distributors Inc. was established as a spin-off from the downtown business; the company operated catalog sales and retail outlets but was not affiliated with Richter & Phillips Co. [3]

2000s

edit

In the early 21st century, Richter & Phillips continued operating as a family-owned jewelry retailer in downtown Cincinnati under the leadership of the Fehr family. [2]

2010s and 2020s

In 2016, Richter & Phillips relocated to its current location[1] in downtown Cincinnati. The company remains family-owned and operated.
