Ema Balaško (born 12 December 2004) is a Croatian handball player who plays as a pivot for RK Lokomotiva Zagreb and the Croatia women's national handball team. She was named in Croatia's squad for the 2025 World Women's Handball Championship, and with Lokomotiva reached the quarter-finals of the 2025–26 Women's EHF European League.[1][2]

Club career

edit

Balaško began playing handball at the age of six with Podravka in her hometown of Koprivnica. She later spent three seasons with ŽRK Zrinski Čakovec. [3]

In June 2024, she signed for ŽRK Bjelovar.[3] During the 2024–25 season she played for Bjelovar in the EHF European Cup.[4] Ahead of the 2025–26 season, she joined RK Lokomotiva Zagreb.[5]

With Lokomotiva, Balaško played in the 2025–26 Women's EHF European League. The club advanced to the quarter-finals after a win over Rapid București in February 2026, and was later eliminated by Dijon.[6][7][2]

International career

edit

Balaško was regular member of the country's cadet and junior national teams.[3]

In September 2025, head coach Ivica Obrvan included Balaško in Croatia's squad for the Cheb Shield preparatory tournament in the Czech Republic.[8] She made her senior debut in Croatia's 36–29 win over Turkey at that tournament.[9]

In November 2025, Balaško was selected for Croatia's squad for the 2025 World Women's Handball Championship.[1][10] She made her major-tournament debut in Croatia's President's Cup match against Iran in December 2025.[11]

In March 2026, Balaško was recalled for Croatia's final EHF EURO 2026 qualification matches against Finland and Kosovo after missing the previous action through injury.[12] Croatia secured qualification with a win over Finland, and Balaško scored in the final group match against Kosovo.[13][14]
