Asociación Española para la Inteligencia Artificial (AEPIA) is a Spanish nonprofit scientific society founded in 1984.[1] Its stated purpose is to promote research, training, and the transfer of knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Spain.[1] AEPIA is the official Spanish member of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI).[2]
History
editAEPIA was established in 1984 by a group of researchers led by Professor José Cuena, who became its first president.[3][4] The association was created to bring together the Spanish scientific and professional community working in artificial intelligence.[3] Since its founding, AEPIA has organized activities aimed at advancing AI research and education in Spain.
In 2021, Alicia Troncoso Lora, a professor of Computer Science at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, was elected president of the association.[5][6]
Activities
editConferences
editAEPIA organizes the Spanish Conference on Artificial Intelligence (CAEPIA), a biennial academic conference that has been held since 1985.[7][8][9] The conference is open to researchers worldwide and covers topics in AI from formal, methodological, technical, and applied perspectives.[7] Selected papers from CAEPIA are published in Springer's Advances in Artificial Intelligence series, part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series.[7]
CAEPIA also serves as a forum for federated conferences and workshops, including the Spanish Congress on Fuzzy Logic and Technologies (ESTYLF), the Spanish Congress on Metaheuristics, Evolutionary and Bio-inspired Algorithms (MAEB), and the Symposium on Theory and Applications of Data Mining (TAMIDA).[10]
Summer School
editAwards
editAEPIA has operated an award program since 1997 to recognize individuals for scientific, teaching, and organizational achievements in artificial intelligence in Spain.[12][3] The awards are presented during the CAEPIA conference.[8] AEPIA also offers awards for the best bachelor's (TFG) and master's (TFM) theses in artificial intelligence.[13]
Master's Program
editAEPIA faculty members teach an official master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence Research at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP).[14][15]The program is accredited by Spain's National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation (ANECA) and provides access to doctoral studies.[15]
Publication
editAEPIA co-publishes the international journal Progress in Artificial Intelligence with Springer.[16] The journal publishes four issues per year and covers areas including machine learning, deep learning, soft computing, multi-agent systems, natural language processing, and robotics.[16] It is indexed in Scopus, the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), DBLP, and other academic databases.[16]
AEPIA also sponsors the Inteligencia Artificial journal, published by the Ibero-American Society for Artificial Intelligence (Iberamia).[17]
Governance and Membership
editAEPIA is a member of EurAI, the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, which comprises national AI societies from European countries. The association is registered as a nonprofit organization with Spain's Ministry of the Interior.[1]
