Big Sir (duo)

(Redirected from Digital Gardens)

Big Sir was an American musical duo from Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 2000 by Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta and Racer X) and singer Lisa Papineau. Big Sir recorded a total of four albums between then and 2014. The duo began when Papineau's previous band, Pet, dissolved in the late 1990s. The duo released a self-titled album in 2000, but did not release any more projects until 2006 due to Alderete's involvement with the Mars Volta.[1][2][3]

'Blutrausch (Smooth Interlude)' from Big Sir's 2006 album Und Die Scheibe Andert Sichimmer [Gold Standard Laboratories]. Juan plays one consistent fretless line throughout most of the song: a hypnotic tonal bedrock in D major that aims for consistency, right down to the placement of the ghost- and gracenotes. Pay close attention to the left-hand positioning; you shouldn't need to move around much, and that's essential to keeping the line smooth and melodic. Says Juan, 'For that line I used the front pickup and went through a vintage Boss OC-2 Octave pedal. The fretless bass works best for me; the semitones available open up my musical vocabulary.'
